The National Rescue Movement (NRM) has unequivocally declared that it will not merge with any political party in the lead-up to the 2027 general election. The party has also affirmed its commitment to fielding its own presidential candidate, positioning itself as a standalone contender in the upcoming electoral cycle.
NRM's Stand on Political Alliances
National Chairman of the NRM, Prince Chinedu Obi, made this announcement during a press briefing held in Abuja. He emphasized that the party is fully prepared to initiate the process of selecting a credible presidential candidate who can effectively challenge the current administration in the 2027 elections.
According to Obi, "We're not planning on merging with any political party or joining a coalition. We will produce our presidential candidate." He further elaborated that the party is ready to undergo the necessary procedures to identify a viable candidate capable of mounting a strong opposition to the incumbent government.
Resolution of Internal Crisis
Obi highlighted that the Federal High Court has recently resolved the internal crisis within the NRM. On Tuesday, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik dismissed an appeal filed by Chief Edozie Njoku's faction of the party, effectively ending the dispute.
This legal resolution has solidified the NRM's position as one of the strongest political parties in Nigeria, free from the internal conflicts that plague other opposition groups. Obi stated, "We want Nigerians to know that the impression they have that the NRM has a crisis because of some individuals who are not even members of the party, that there's no single crisis in NRM."
Party's Vision and Readiness
The NRM chairman expressed the party's readiness to support any aspirant who demonstrates the strength and capability to contest for available positions in the forthcoming general election. He underscored the party's commitment to rescuing Nigeria from its current challenges, asserting that the NRM is among the few good political parties prepared to lead the nation forward.
Obi concluded by reinforcing the party's unity and determination, stating, "The NRM is the one prepared to rescue Nigeria from the current situation." This declaration sets the stage for a competitive electoral landscape as the 2027 elections approach, with the NRM positioning itself as a key player independent of alliances.
