Dokubo Pledges 2027 Support for Tinubu, Cites Decades-Long Loyalty
Dokubo Vows to Back Tinubu's Re-election Bid in 2027

In a significant political declaration, prominent Niger Delta activist and traditional ruler, Asari Dokubo, has publicly committed his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's anticipated re-election campaign in 2027. Dokubo made this pledge during a visit by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to his palace in Degema, Rivers State.

A Bond Forged in the Early 90s

Dokubo revealed that his relationship with the Nigerian leader is not a recent development but one rooted in history, tracing back to 1992. He emphasized that this bond was formed long before he assumed his current role as a traditional ruler. "I was not a traditional ruler when we met in 1992. I never thought I would ever become what I am today," Dokubo stated, as reported by Vanguard.

The activist turned monarch framed his upcoming support as a reciprocal act of loyalty. He recounted that President Tinubu stood by him during his most challenging times, and now, he feels compelled to return the favour. "He stood by me in my most difficult period, and it is now my turn to also stand by him and also support him," Dokubo affirmed.

Unwavering Support Despite Past Criticism

This pledge of allegiance is particularly noteworthy given Dokubo's recent public criticisms of the Tinubu administration. He had previously faulted the President's cabinet reshuffle, specifically the dissolution of the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, which he described as a betrayal that shortchanged the Niger Delta region.

However, Dokubo clarified that his past opposition was driven solely by his duty to advocate for the interests of his people, not by any personal rift with Tinubu. His latest statements indicate a separation between his role as a community representative and his personal political alliances.

Addressing Wike directly during the visit, Dokubo promised, "Like you said, my friend, everything that is going to happen, I will be with you in making sure that my friend, the president, succeeds. Everything that I am capable of doing, I will do to make sure that he succeeds."

Broader Political Implications

This development carries weight for the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections. Dokubo remains an influential voice in the Niger Delta, a region crucial for Nigeria's economic and political stability. His explicit endorsement could signal a consolidation of support for Tinubu within certain segments of the South-South geopolitical zone.

The visit by Minister Nyesom Wike, a powerful political figure in his own right, to Dokubo's palace also highlights the ongoing networking and alliance-building activities among Nigeria's political elite as the next election cycle gradually approaches.

Dokubo's history includes leadership of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force (NDPVF) and outspoken commentary on national issues, including strongly warning against foreign military intervention in Nigeria. His latest move to firmly align with Tinubu's political future adds a new layer to the complex dynamics of Nigerian politics.
