Former Governor of Plateau State, Senator Jonah Jang, has issued a strong denial against media reports claiming he demanded the resignation of the incumbent Governor, Caleb Mutfwang. This follows Governor Mutfwang's recent political move from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Clarification from Jang's Media Office
The rebuttal was formally presented in a press statement released on Monday, January 12, 2026, by Senator Jang's Media Consultant, Comrade Clinton Garuba. Garuba stated that the senator's comments from a recent PDP meeting were taken out of context and misrepresented.
"For clarity, Senator Jang’s remarks were quoted out of context. At no time during the PDP stakeholders’ meeting did he call for Governor Mutfwang’s resignation," the statement read. It further explained that Jang's criticism was directed at the general practice of politicians switching parties, not specifically at Mutfwang.
The statement concluded with a call to action for the people of Plateau State, urging them to disregard the misleading reports and continue supporting Governor Caleb Mutfwang as he leads under the people's mandate.
Context of the Original Remarks
The controversy stemmed from a PDP stakeholders' meeting held on Friday evening prior to the statement. During his address, Senator Jang praised the PDP as a strong and enduring political platform, suggesting other parties had come and gone.
Without naming any individual, Jang made a general observation about Nigerian politics, stating, "he had gone round the world and discovered that only in Nigeria would someone carry his mandate to another party platform." He suggested that individuals who do so should resign to allow the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a fresh election.
Governor Mutfwang's Separate Engagement on National Future
In a separate development, Governor Caleb Mutfwang expressed optimism about Nigeria's future. He delivered this message on Sunday at the opening of the 2026 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Annual Management Conference at Crispan Hotel in Jos, Plateau State.
Represented by his Deputy, Ngo Josephine Piyo, the governor highlighted the NYSC's crucial role in national unity and development since its creation after the civil war. He commended the scheme's impact in education, health, rural infrastructure, and skills acquisition for corps members.
Mutfwang pointed to the NYSC's skills training initiatives as a practical response to graduate unemployment. He also recalled his personal visit to the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Mangu in 2025, where he directed immediate renovation work to improve facilities, underscoring his administration's commitment to youth development.
