Peter Obi's Media Office Alleges Coordinated Plot to Undermine 2027 Candidacy

The Media Office of Peter Obi has issued a stark warning, alleging a coordinated effort to undermine his political ambitions ahead of the 2027 presidential elections. In a statement released by spokesperson Ibrahim Umar, the office claimed that sustained attempts since the 2023 polls have aimed to destabilize the internal structure of the Labour Party and weaken Obi's political base, posing a significant threat to Nigeria's democratic process.

Allegations of Judicial and Political Maneuvers

The statement referenced various legal and political developments, including court rulings and party disputes, which the office described as part of a broader scheme to frustrate Obi's candidacy. It asserted that certain judicial decisions and political maneuvers have contributed to prolonged uncertainty within the political landscape, creating an uneven playing field.

According to the media office, Obi's eventual alignment with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was met with intensified opposition. It alleged that subsequent events, such as party realignments and coalition activities, triggered additional resistance from political actors seeking to limit his influence and participation in the electoral process.

Concerns Over INEC and Democratic Institutions

The statement also raised serious concerns over the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), suggesting that recent interpretations of court rulings and decisions affecting party leadership structures could unfairly impact political actors. The media office warned that these developments could undermine public confidence in democratic institutions and called on Nigerian authorities to uphold transparency, fairness, and adherence to the rule of law.

Reaffirming its commitment to democratic principles, the office urged stakeholders to ensure all candidates are given equal opportunity to present their platforms to the electorate. It stressed that democracy thrives when citizens can make informed choices without interference or exclusion, and called for collective efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and protect the rights of all political actors.

Presidency Denies Involvement in Obi's Political Challenges

Meanwhile, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, has vehemently denied any presidential involvement in Obi's abandonment of the Labour Party or his current difficulties within the ADC. Onanuga criticized Obi, stating, "After using the Labour Party to vie for the highest office in the country, Obi dumped it in a classic case of use-and-dump. He failed to demonstrate leadership in resolving the party's crisis."

He further accused Obi of aligning with his online base, the Obidient movement, without transforming it into a political party, and described his move to the ADC as opportunistic. Onanuga asserted, "What is the connection of Tinubu with the ADC crisis? Absolutely none. Whatever problem they have is self-inflicted." He dismissed allegations against President Tinubu as "sheer baloney" and an unfair attempt to besmirch his democratic credentials, emphasizing Tinubu's incumbency and achievements.

ADC Chieftain Accuses Federal Government of Undermining Opposition

In a related development, Niyi Aborisade, a governorship aspirant of the ADC in Oyo State, accused the Federal Government of moves to undermine opposition parties, warning that such efforts would ultimately fail. Addressing journalists in Ibadan, Aborisade alleged a deliberate attempt to destabilize opposition platforms across the country, citing recent INEC actions like the delisting of some party leaders as evidence of political interference.

He expressed concern over the neutrality of key democratic institutions and urged the government to focus on addressing pressing national challenges such as insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, and the rising cost of living, rather than targeting opposition parties.

APC Chieftain Dismisses Propaganda Against Tinubu

Conversely, Princewill Dike, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, stated that no amount of propaganda against President Tinubu will stop his re-election in the 2027 General Elections. Dike, a Port Harcourt-based legal practitioner, reacted to comments by former Senate President David Mark, who described a court order derecognizing the ADC as an "attack on democracy" by the Tinubu-led administration.

Dike labeled critics as "power hungry" and defended Tinubu's government, asserting that the president's achievements and incumbency position him strongly for the upcoming elections. The ongoing political tensions highlight deepening divisions and concerns over the integrity of Nigeria's electoral process as the 2027 polls approach.
