Olubadan Calls for Fairness, Developmental Journalism in Nigeria
Olubadan Urges Journalists to Uphold Fairness, Shun Fake News

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba (Dr) Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has issued a powerful call to journalists across Nigeria, urging them to prioritize fairness, objectivity, and developmental reporting in their work.

A Royal Appeal for Constructive Media

The monarch delivered his message on Tuesday, 13 January 2026, during a courtesy visit by the executive members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, at his palace in Oke Aremo, Ibadan. The delegation was led by their newly elected chairman, Akeem Abas.

Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Chief Ayoade Solomon Olugbemiga, Oba Ladoja emphasized that the era of destructive or "pull-him-down" journalism must end. He stated that modern journalism should mirror practices in developed nations by focusing on constructive information that fosters peace, unity, and meaningful progress.

"Gone are the days of destructive journalism," the Olubadan declared. "The modern era demands constructive information dissemination, which promotes peaceful co-existence, unity, progress and meaningful development."

Journalists as Pillars of Truth and Development

Oba Ladoja further warned against the dangers of spreading false information, stressing the press's crucial role in positively shaping public opinion. He highlighted that journalists carry a significant responsibility in nation-building and must therefore be guardians of truth.

In a gesture of support, the revered traditional ruler also offered prayers for God's protection, blessings, and favour upon all journalists in Nigeria as they perform their professional duties.

Abas called on other traditional rulers across Yorubaland and Nigeria to emulate Oba Ladoja's exemplary qualities, which include:

  • Humility and resilience
  • Dedication to cultural preservation
  • Service to humanity
  • Commitment to human and infrastructural development

He assured the Olubadan of the journalists' unwavering support in advancing the development of Ibadanland and Oyo State.
