Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has voiced strong opposition to a recent notice issued by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), describing it as deeply troubling, especially amid the ongoing general elections. The NBC directive, which targets broadcast stations, was prompted by a sustained increase in ethical and professional violations, particularly in news, current affairs, and political programming.
Obi's Critique of the NBC Directive
In his reaction, Obi expressed concern that Nigeria is moving in the wrong direction by undermining vital democratic institutions. He emphasized that a free and responsible media should not be viewed as an adversary by any administration, especially one that professes to have championed democratic values. According to Obi, efforts to suppress voices, moderate opinions, or intimidate journalists under the pretext of regulation only serve to further weaken the country's already fragile democratic framework.
Call for Stronger Institutions Over Control
Obi argued that institutions are designed to serve the people, not the government. He highlighted pressing national issues, such as rising insecurity, diminishing faith among young Nigerians, and economic struggles affecting average citizens. Instead of focusing on controlling media narratives, Obi urged leaders to prioritize delivering tangible results and addressing these critical challenges.
He pointed out that Nigeria does not require stricter control but rather stronger, more independent institutions. Obi expressed solidarity with media houses and broadcasters who are resisting what he termed an attempt to silence independent voices and restrict free expression. He called for a return to principles of transparency, accountability, and true independence across all government arms and agencies, warning that continued erosion of these values endangers democracy.
