President Tinubu to Address National Assembly on Democracy Day

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to address a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12, 2026, as part of the Democracy Day celebrations. This announcement was made by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for the 27th Democracy Day celebration.

The SGF emphasized that Democracy Day serves as a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by Nigerians in the struggle for democratic governance, particularly the heroes of the June 12, 1993, election. He paid tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose commitment to democracy led to the recognition of June 12 as Nigeria's Democracy Day.

Democracy Day Activities

The approved activities for the celebration include a World Press Conference on June 4, Special Juma'at Prayers on June 5, an Inter-Denominational Church Service on June 7, a Democracy Day Public Lecture on June 9, Youth and Women-Oriented Programmes on June 10, and the Presidential Broadcast and Joint National Assembly Address on June 12. A Democracy Day Gala Night will also take place later that day.

Significance of June 12

June 12 is Nigeria's official Democracy Day, commemorating the historic 1993 election widely regarded as the freest and fairest in the nation's history. The election was annulled by the military government, leading to years of political turmoil. MKO Abiola, the presumed winner, never assumed office and died under controversial circumstances in 1998. The day is now a symbol of Nigeria's democratic struggle and resilience.

President Tinubu's address to the National Assembly will highlight his administration's progress in repositioning the country through reform initiatives despite ongoing socio-economic challenges. The celebration aims to honor the sacrifices of those who fought for democracy and to reaffirm Nigeria's commitment to democratic governance.
