Wike Urges PDP to Heed Appeal Court Ruling, Avoid Supreme Court
Wike: PDP Should Not Appeal to Supreme Court After Judgment

Wike Reacts to Appeal Court Judgment on PDP Convention

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has responded to the recent Court of Appeal judgment regarding the Peoples Democratic Party's national convention, urging party members to reflect on the ruling and avoid escalating the matter to the Supreme Court. Speaking at his residence in Abuja on Monday, March 9, 2026, Wike emphasized that the law has spoken, and the judgment should serve as a wake-up call for the PDP to salvage its internal situation and move forward.

Court of Appeal Upholds Ruling on PDP Convention

The Court of Appeal in Abuja upheld a Federal High Court ruling that restrains the Independent National Electoral Commission from recognizing the outcome of the PDP national convention. This decision has significant implications for the party's internal processes and its upcoming convention scheduled for March 29-30, 2026. Wike described the judgment as a defining moment that requires PDP members to look inward and prioritize the party's stability over personal interests.

Warning Against Supreme Court Appeal

Wike strongly advised against taking the matter to the Supreme Court, stating that anyone who truly loves the PDP should refrain from such actions to avoid prolonging the internal crisis. He asserted, "If you are a lover of the party, you will not go to the Supreme Court. But if that is what they want, we are always ready." This statement highlights the potential for further legal battles if party factions choose to challenge the appellate court's decision.

PDP Convention Preparations Underway

Despite the legal challenges, Wike confirmed that the PDP convention remains unchanged, with preparations already in top gear. The party has secured approval to use the Velodrome of the National Stadium in Abuja for the event. Wike disclosed, "We have gotten the approval of the National Sports Commission to conduct the convention at the Velodrome. We have started preparing for it, and it will hold by the grace of God." This indicates the party's commitment to proceeding with its plans despite the ongoing judicial scrutiny.

Background on PDP Internal Issues

The Court of Appeal also upheld the suspension of key PDP officials, including Samuel Anyanwu and Abdulrahman Mohammed, which was originally pronounced by the party's national working committee in November 2025. Additionally, PDP governors had earlier urged calm ahead of the appellate ruling, with Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State describing it as a crucial moment for Nigeria's democracy. The party leaders have emphasized respect for the judicial process and called for maturity to preserve national stability.

Wike's remarks underscore the deep-seated divisions within the PDP and the need for resolution to strengthen the opposition party ahead of future political engagements. The situation reflects broader challenges in Nigerian politics, where legal disputes often intersect with party dynamics and electoral processes.
