In a bold address to his political opponents, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has called for a shift from resentment to a study of his methods. Speaking directly to critics, he advocated for learning over hatred.
Leadership Lessons from Port Harcourt
The minister made these remarks on Saturday, 10 January 2026, during a gratitude tour to the Port Harcourt City Local Government Area in Rivers State. Wike framed his philosophy around the core tenet of listening. "A bad leader is one who refuses to take advice. A good leader listens," he stated, emphasising that effective governance requires openness to counsel.
He pointed to Port Harcourt's diverse demographic as proof of his broad appeal. "Winning elections in a local government area that accommodates Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba residents is a clear indication of broad-based acceptance," Wike noted, describing the city as truly metropolitan.
Unity and the Road to 2027
Wike assured his supporters that the political structure they built remains robust. He insisted that the two major parties in Rivers State are collaborating and that nothing can hinder their political goals. "Political structures are not built overnight," he said, affirming the strength and unity of the Renewed Hope family.
Looking ahead, the minister was direct about future ambitions. "If you support us in 2023 and we come to say thank you, the next thing is to ask you to support us again in 2027," he told the crowd, setting the stage for the next electoral cycle.
Endorsements and Collaborative Milestones
Wike also defended the cross-party collaboration that secured victory for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling it a major achievement. He challenged other states to emulate the Rivers model instead of criticising it.
The event featured strong endorsements from local leaders. Blessing Amadi, the member representing Port Harcourt II Federal Constituency, praised Wike for advancing women's participation in politics and pledged continued female support for him and President Tinubu.
Similarly, the Chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Allwell Ihunda, thanked Wike for facilitating the return of elected local officials. He credited this to credible local government elections and pledged unwavering support for Wike and President Tinubu towards 2027.
