Bandits Kill 20 in Borno and Adamawa Border Communities Amidst Boko Haram Attacks
Suspected Boko Haram members have brutally killed 20 residents in two border communities located in Borno and Adamawa states, according to local authorities. The attacks occurred on Tuesday afternoon, with the terrorists storming Pubagu community in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State and Mayo-Ladde community in Hong Local Council of Adamawa State. The incidents have raised serious concerns about security in these vulnerable regions.
Details of the Twin Incidents
Confirming the tragic events to The Guardian on Wednesday in Maiduguri, Borno state, the Chairman of Askira/Uba Local Government Area, Mada Saidu, provided a detailed account. He stated, "Eleven of our people were killed in Pubagu, while nine lost their lives in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State." The attacks took place around 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, with the terrorists overpowering local security operatives before carrying out the killings.
The two communities are situated on the southern fringe of the Sambisa Forest and are separated by River Yedzaram, which flows into Lake Chad. Saidu emphasized, "In total, we have 20 deaths, 11 from Askira Uba in Borno, nine from Hong Local Government, Adamawa." He further explained that the insurgents gained access to the communities and shot their victims, highlighting the severity of the assault.
Security Challenges and Eyewitness Accounts
Saidu noted that the local security forces, including hunters and vigilantes, were initially present but were overwhelmed by the well-armed terrorists. "I later went there together with the Army. Initially, it was local security that was there, that is, hunters and vigilantes. But they were overpowered by the armed terrorists," he stated. This underscores the ongoing challenges faced by communities in defending against such attacks.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers arrived on motorcycles and operated for several hours, destroying houses and looting food items and other property. One survivor, who requested anonymity, described the harrowing scene: "Yesterday evening, the terrorists stormed our community in Pubagu. They shot sporadically into the air for hours, burning houses and shops. They killed both men and women after operating for more than an hour."
The source added that the terrorists faced little resistance from security operatives in both communities. "The local vigilantes and hunters tried their best. Unfortunately, the terrorists were well armed and in much greater numbers. The resistance was not strong enough. The hunters later fled for their lives, too," the source explained, painting a grim picture of the security situation.
Context of Recent Violence
This attack follows a recent incident on April 16, 2026, where Boko Haram terrorists killed four soldiers and one civilian in Mussa community, also in Askira Uba Local Government Area. These events highlight a pattern of escalating violence in the region, raising alarms about the effectiveness of current security measures.
The communities affected are in remote border areas, making them particularly vulnerable to such incursions. The use of motorcycles by the attackers suggests a high level of mobility and coordination, further complicating defense efforts.
Local authorities and security forces are urged to enhance their presence and response capabilities in these regions to prevent future tragedies. The loss of 20 lives in this single incident underscores the urgent need for improved security strategies and community protection initiatives.
