The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), led by Comrade Uchenna Madu, has declared May 30, 2026, as Biafra Day Celebration and urged its members to sit at home on that day.
59th Anniversary of Biafra Declaration
According to the group, the date also marks the 59th anniversary of the declaration of Biafra by General Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. In a statement, MASSOB's National Director of Information, Edeson Samuel, emphasized that it would be a day of sober reflection across Biafraland. All markets, public and private motor parks, schools, banks, and other public business premises are expected to remain closed from 6 am to 4 pm on May 30, 2026.
Honoring Sacrifices
The statement explained that the closure of public places and services on that day is a mark of honor, respect, and patriotism to the fatherland. It is an appreciation of the numerous sacrifices made by Biafrans during the three-year war of genocide against Biafra by British-backed Nigeria.
Solidarity with Nnamdi Kanu
MASSOB also stated that the anniversary is being used to show solidarity with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who they claim is wrongly imprisoned for the sake of Biafra. The group reiterated its call for his immediate release and affirmed that its struggle for Biafra is unstoppable and will continue until it is restored.
Annual Civil Disobedience
The group noted that the call for a sit-at-home has been an annual event and a key measure for effective civil disobedience. MASSOB reminded the people that this exercise has always been the lifeblood of the Biafran struggle, boosting the potency and acceptability of the non-violent self-determination movement.
The closure of markets, parks, schools, and other business premises is a one-day mandatory exercise that Biafrans shall observe as a mark of respect and love for their fatherland. However, MASSOB emphasized that Biafrans shall not be compelled, pressurized, or forced to observe the sit-at-home. The group and other pro-Biafra agitators will not molest, compel, or intimidate anyone to participate, as all members will stay indoors in observance of the great day. There will be no physical demonstration on that day.
