Three persons were killed, and two others sustained injuries after gunmen attacked a mining site at Nyango in Gyel District, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State. The incident occurred around 11:50 am on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, according to Daily Trust.

Attack causes panic at mining site

The attack caused panic as miners and residents fled in confusion. A resident, Chuwang Rogo, said the attackers stormed the mining site and opened fire on miners indiscriminately.

Berom Youth Moulders condemn attack

Reacting to the incident, the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) condemned the attack, expressing concern over what it described as recurring insecurity in Gyel and surrounding communities. The National Publicity Secretary of BYM, Rwang Tengwong, said the attack is not the first violent incident recorded in the area.

The group noted that residents of Gyel and neighbouring communities in Bassa Local Government Area had repeatedly raised concerns over attacks and insecurity allegedly perpetrated by armed elements operating around the Gyero and Rafin Bauna axis.

BYM calls for decisive action

“BYM calls on security agencies and government authorities to urgently dismantle criminal hideouts, and take decisive actions to end the cycle of violence that has continued to threaten peaceful communities in the affected areas,” Tengwong said.

“The association commiserates with the families of those who lost their lives, prays for the speedy recovery of the injured, and urges residents to remain vigilant and continue cooperating with security agencies in the interest of lasting peace and security on the Plateau,” the group added.

MACBAN denies Fulani involvement

BYM accused members of the Fulani community of launching the attack. However, the Chairman of the Miyetti Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Plateau State denied the allegation, describing it as false.
