Zamfara State Government Reaffirms Firm Stance Against Negotiating with Bandits
The Zamfara State Government has reiterated its unwavering policy of non-negotiation with bandits, pledging to intensify efforts and adopt innovative strategies to address the persistent insecurity plaguing the region. This firm commitment was articulated by the Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, Mani Malam Mummuni Mudi, who also serves as the Chairman of the State Committee on Sympathy and Humanitarian Assistance, established by Governor Dauda Lawal.
Condolence Visit to Bunkasau Village Following Tragic Attack
Deputy Governor Mudi made these remarks during a solemn condolence visit to the residents of Bunkasau village in Bukkuyum Local Government Area. The visit followed a recent and devastating attack by bandits that resulted in significant loss of life and injuries. Expressing profound sorrow, Mudi confirmed that at least twenty-six individuals lost their lives in the assault, with several others sustaining various injuries.
The Deputy Governor commended the courage and resilience demonstrated by the villagers, who reportedly resisted the attackers and neutralized several bandits during the confrontation. He extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, offering prayers for the repose of the souls of the deceased and a swift recovery for the injured.
Financial Support and Legislative Considerations Announced
In a move to provide immediate relief, Deputy Governor Mudi announced that the State government has approved a support package of fifteen million naira (15,000,000.00). This fund is designated to assist the families of those who lost their lives and those who were injured during the attack, underscoring the government's commitment to humanitarian assistance in crisis situations.
During the visit, the Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Bilyaminu Ismail Moriki, also addressed the community. He praised the bravery of the Bunkasau residents in defending themselves and disclosed that the State Assembly is considering the enactment of legislation to permit communities to bear arms for self-defense, in alignment with constitutional provisions. This potential legislative action aims to empower local populations in their fight against banditry.
Community Appeals for Enhanced Protection Measures
The Chief Imam of Bunkasau, Malam Abubakar, expressed gratitude to the government delegation for their visit. He revealed that the community has endured repeated attacks from bandits over an extended period but has recently mounted a strong resistance, leading to the elimination of several assailants. Abubakar appealed to the government for additional support and more robust measures to enhance community protection, highlighting the ongoing vulnerabilities faced by residents.
The Deputy Governor was accompanied on this visit by a high-level delegation, including the Speaker of the State Assembly, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ahmad Garba Yandi, the Chairman of Bukkuyum Local Government Area, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Mannir Fura Girke, and other key government officials. This collective presence underscores the State's unified approach to addressing security challenges and supporting affected communities.
