EFCC Issues Alert Over Surge in Impersonators Conducting Fake Sting Operations

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a stark warning to Nigerians regarding a disturbing increase in criminal activities aimed at tarnishing its image. According to a statement released on Tuesday, April 21, the agency highlighted that malicious actors are employing various fraudulent tactics while posing as EFCC officers.

Multiple Criminal Gangs Exposed in EFCC Statement

Intelligence gathered by the Commission reveals that these impersonators are using ingenious methods to deceive the public and damage the EFCC's credibility. The agency detailed several specific gangs involved in these illicit activities.

Gang Targeting Youths at Eateries and Funspots: One group operates around popular dining and entertainment venues in major cities. Their modus operandi involves ambushing innocent young people as they leave these locations, harassing them under unfounded suspicions of being internet fraudsters. These criminals then dispossess their victims of valuables while dressed in fake EFCC uniforms and sometimes moving them to locations designed to resemble EFCC offices.

Gang Harassing Motorists Based on Number Plates: Another criminal faction focuses on innocent motorists, using their vehicle number plates as pretexts for harassment. These individuals wield dangerous weapons to compel victims into paying money based on trumped-up accusations.

Online Impersonators and Fraudulent Content Creators: A third category involves online fraudsters who dramatize fake EFCC sting operations. They create content showing broken doors, windows, and forced entries into premises, portraying these as actions by the Commission. Such misleading depictions could deceive unsuspecting members of the public into blaming the EFCC for the contrived actions of impersonators.

EFCC Appeals for Public Vigilance and Adherence to Proper Channels

The agency has appealed to Nigerians to exercise caution when evaluating claims that seek to undermine the Commission's reputation. The EFCC emphasized that it has standard operating procedures for all its activities and established appropriate channels for addressing grievances against any operation or officer.

While the EFCC remains steadfast in its mandate to combat economic and financial crimes and other corrupt practices, the agency urged well-meaning and reform-minded Nigerians not to let their judgment of the Commission's work be negatively influenced by these impersonators, blackmailers, and fake characters exploiting the EFCC's identity for nefarious purposes.
