EFCC Arrests Prophet Over N70m Church Fraud

The Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into a self-proclaimed prophet, Godwin Sunday Ajuluchukwucheya, also known as Prophet Sunday Koboko, for allegedly defrauding his church members of N70,391,600.

Petitioner's Allegations

A petitioner, Okey Uwakwe, reported that Ajuluchukwucheya presented himself as a true man of God capable of luring his brother, who had been abroad since 1997, to return home. Uwakwe claimed he paid the prophet N6,231,400 for spiritual works.

The suspect also deceived Uwakwe into believing he could make his sister-in-law, childless for over 15 years, conceive. Ajuluchukwucheya allegedly collected N3,251,200 for this purpose.

Lottery and Business Schemes

Uwakwe further alleged that the prophet announced to his church members that he had won N33 billion in a lotto game and assured contributors would receive dividends. Uwakwe contributed N3,349,000. Additionally, members were lured into contributing to a rice processing machine worth N1 billion, with Uwakwe paying N500,000. In total, he sent N13,331,600 without any results.

Other Victims Come Forward

During the investigation, other church members flooded the EFCC with claims of fraud. One member stated, "When I came there, a whole lot of things were going on as investments in the church which I partook in virtually all of them… ranging from the issue of him winning N33 billion with Baba Ijebu. He said the money could not be retrieved due to its size, so members had to buy holy ghost thunder to blast the spiritual army being organized by Baba Ijebu. He sold each spiritual thunder for N38,000, and we had to buy 1,000 pieces."

The total amount allegedly taken from all members is N70,391,600.

Modus Operandi

The EFCC revealed that the suspect's modus operandi involved luring members into buying his "products" for prosperity, including miracle stickers, spiritual dragons, and holy ghost thunder. One victim said, "He asked me to do what they tagged holy ghost thunder, believing it was going to solve my problems. I bought it, and after all the payments, nothing happened."

The commission stated that the suspect will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.
