The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has presented evidence in court that an Ethiopian Airlines aircraft was used for the brief unveiling of Nigeria Air during the tenure of former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika. The revelation came during the ongoing fraud trial against Sirika and three others, including his daughter and son-in-law.
Key Testimony in Court
EFCC investigator Christopher Odofin, the 12th prosecution witness, told an FCT High Court in Abuja that the aircraft was brought into Nigeria between May 27 and 29, 2023. It was painted with Nigeria Air branding and displayed during a public unveiling ceremony before being flown back to Ethiopia, where the markings were removed.
Odofin stated that the arrangement was part of a charter agreement with Ethiopian Airlines, allowing the aircraft to be positioned in Abuja for a static display. The crew reportedly arrived in Ethiopian Airlines uniforms, while individuals were assembled locally for ceremonial photographs to support the unveiling.
Broader Fraud Allegations
The EFCC alleges that the Nigeria Air project involved multiple contracts awarded under the Federal Ministry of Aviation during Sirika's tenure. Odofin linked parts of the project to a company allegedly associated with a close associate of the former minister, which received contract awards connected to the national carrier initiative.
Investigators also reviewed electronic communications, including a voice note allegedly sent by Sirika directing that certain contract processes be followed.
Nigeria Air Project Background
The Nigeria Air project was officially unveiled in the final days of the Buhari administration, with government officials touting it as a major step toward establishing a national carrier. However, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority later raised concerns about the project's readiness, citing gaps in certification requirements.
Legal Proceedings
All defendants in the case have denied the allegations. The EFCC has tendered documentary evidence and digital recordings, which it intends to rely on as the trial continues. Justice Sylvanus Oriji adjourned the matter to June 10 for further hearing.
A separate EFCC case involving Sirika on alleged contract fraud is also ongoing before another court in Abuja.
