A friendly football match between Eniwari and Opuama communities in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State turned fatal when fans from the opposing team attacked and killed a youth from Eniwari, identified as Thomas Ogbianawei.
Details of the Incident
According to community sources, tensions erupted during the match on Saturday, June 13, 2026, after a disagreement broke out among players from the two teams. The misunderstanding escalated into a confrontation on the field, though no spectators or match officials were reported to have participated in the clash.
The situation worsened after the game. Some members of the visiting Opuama team, while returning from the match, encountered Ogbianawei along the route between Eniwari and Fonibiri communities. They attacked him after identifying him as an indigene of Eniwari.
Casualty and Community Reaction
Ogbianawei sustained severe injuries and later died, throwing the community into mourning and heightening tensions in the area. Community leaders have appealed for restraint, urging youths to avoid reprisals that could further escalate the situation.
Police Response
Police spokesman in Bayelsa State, DSP Musa Mohammed, confirmed the incident, stating that an investigation has commenced and one suspect has been arrested in connection with the killing.
