Court Remands Man for Assaulting Wife Over Unwanted Meal

A Gambian man, Lamin Badjie, has been remanded in prison after pleading guilty to assaulting his wife, Fatou Sanneh, following a dispute over dinner. The incident, which occurred last week in Foni Mandina, left Sanneh with a serious eye injury. Badjie was arrested and transferred to Brikama Police Station before being arraigned before the Brikama Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, July 2, 2026.

Details of the Assault

According to Fatou Sanneh, the argument began on Tuesday evening when her husband returned home and requested dinner. She served him nyankatang mixed with benachin, but Badjie repeatedly complained about the meal. “I asked if he wanted nyankatang by itself, but he continued complaining,” Sanneh explained. The situation escalated when Badjie asked for water and then spat on her. After she handed him the water, he followed her, threw the bowl, and began beating her. His aunt intervened and pulled Sanneh away, but Badjie resumed the assault after Sanneh remarked that a man who beats his wife does not live long. The beating continued until he injured her eye.

Medical Treatment and Legal Outcome

Sanneh was first taken to Kanilai Health Centre and later referred to Bwiam General Hospital, where she was admitted overnight for treatment. The couple has two children together. In court, Badjie pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm. The magistrate fined him D100,000 and ordered an additional D100,000 in compensation to his wife. He was subsequently remanded at Mile 2 prison.
