A Ghanaian man sparked widespread alarm and condemnation after firing multiple live rounds from a rifle into the air in a crowded Accra neighbourhood. The dangerous act was a celebratory welcome for visiting Nigerian Afrobeats superstar, Asake.
Dangerous Celebration for a Star
The incident, captured in a video that went viral on December 29, 2025, shows the excited fan standing next to Asake amidst a crowd. Holding the rifle aloft, the man shouted, "My brother from another mother is here," before discharging the weapon skyward. Notably, before firing, he made a direct appeal for leniency to authorities, including Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama.
Asake, whose real name is Ahmed Ololade, was in Accra for his AfroFuture 2025 concert. The artist is globally renowned for hits like "Mr Money" and "Omo Ope" featuring Olamide.
Public Fury and Calls for Arrest
The video immediately triggered a flood of angry reactions from Ghanaians on social media. The core concerns centred on two major issues: the illegal possession of what appeared to be an automatic rifle and the reckless endangerment of public safety by firing live ammunition in a populated area.
Many users tagged the Ghana Police Service, demanding the man's immediate arrest. Critics highlighted the poor handling of the weapon, including firing with one hand, warning that any recoil mishap could have led to fatal injuries in the crowd. Comments questioned how he obtained such a firearm and why he felt emboldened to use it so publicly.
Netizens React to the Reckless Act
Social media commentary was unified in its condemnation. User @benjamin2u pointed out the safety lapse: "Small recoil issue, and dead body go surplus... then pointed rifle straight to the crowd." Another, @Kobbystone_1, expressed shock at the type of weapon: "How did we move from owning a handgun/pistol to an assault rifle... wey ebi automatic too o."
Others, like @GentlemanBright, referenced former police chief IGP Dampare, suggesting such an act would have been swiftly dealt with under his tenure. The overarching sentiment was that the celebration was irresponsible and potentially deadly.
Asake's Recent Controversies
This incident adds to recent controversies involving the Nigerian singer. Just days earlier, on December 24, Asake faced backlash after a video allegedly showed him driving his Maybach against traffic on a one-way road in Lagos around 3 a.m. Locals cheered, but netizens criticised him for flouting traffic laws he would be expected to obey in California, where he resides.
The combination of events has put the spotlight on celebrity influence and responsibility, both at home and abroad.
