The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has confirmed the arrest of three individuals for unlawfully disposing of waste. In a statement released on Sunday, Wahab stated that the arrests are part of the government's ongoing efforts to eliminate illegal waste dumping across the state.
Surveillance Operation in Ketu Alapere
According to Wahab, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) Waste Infractions Surveillance and Investigation Team conducted an overnight surveillance operation from May 8 to 9, 2026, in the Ketu Alapere area. During this operation, three persons were apprehended for dumping waste in unauthorized locations. The commissioner announced this via his official X account.
Investigation and Findings
To deter future misconduct, the authorities traced the suspects to their residences to understand the motives behind their actions. Further investigations revealed that their properties lack proper waste storage facilities and have not been registered with the designated Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators. Wahab added that all documented properties have been forwarded to the LAWMA legal department for further legal action. Additionally, all identified black spots were effectively mitigated.
Environmental Sanitation Resumption
To combat dirt and enhance cleanliness, the Lagos State Government ordered the resumption of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise on April 25, 2026. Announcing the resumption, Wahab said last month: "Let us show Lagos and the world that we are ready to take ownership of our environment. Two hours. One Saturday each month. A cleaner, healthier, flood-free Lagos for all of us."
