The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service averted a major disaster yesterday when a stationary saloon car ignited a fire at a multi-storey building housing a Polaris Bank branch on Broad Street, Lagos Island, Lagos State.

According to reports, the fire began at approximately 11:33 a.m. and involved a stationary saloon car parked on the third floor of the 17-storey building, which serves as a parking facility. Videos shared on social media showed thick plumes of smoke billowing from the structure as onlookers, including residents and business operators, gathered at the scene.

Firefighters and other emergency responders arrived promptly and worked to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to adjacent buildings in the densely populated commercial area.

Official Statement

The Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS), Margaret Adeseye, confirmed in a statement that the incident was reported at about 11:33 a.m. and involved a stationary saloon car parked on the third floor of the 17-storey building, which serves as a parking facility. Firefighters from the Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu Fire Stations responded swiftly and contained the fire, preventing it from spreading to other vehicles and sections of the building.

“The only damage recorded was to the affected vehicle and its immediate surroundings. No casualties or injuries were reported. The firefighting operation has been successfully concluded, and normalcy has been fully restored to the area,” she added.
