Two Abuja Neighbors Arrested for Fatal Beating of Teen Who Attacked Mother

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has taken two suspects into custody in connection with a tragic case of culpable homicide that unfolded in the Byazhin area of Abuja. According to an official statement released by SP Josephine Adeh, the command's spokesperson, the incident occurred on February 12 at approximately 11:45 PM, when the Byazhin Divisional Headquarters received a distress call reporting a severe domestic altercation.

Details of the Initial Incident

The call detailed that a 17-year-old boy, identified as Chidera Benjamin, residing in Byazhin Across, had allegedly inflicted a serious machete injury on his mother during a heated family dispute. Police officers were immediately dispatched to the scene upon receipt of the report to investigate the matter further and ensure public safety.

Investigation Findings and Escalation

Preliminary investigations conducted by the authorities revealed that the confrontation between Chidera Benjamin and his mother stemmed from allegations of unauthorized financial transactions. It was discovered that Chidera had been transferring funds from his mother's bank account into his personal Opay account without her consent. When his mother confronted him about these unauthorized transactions, the situation escalated dramatically.

Chidera reportedly became violent and attacked his mother with a machete, causing a severe injury to her hand. This act of aggression was witnessed by two neighbors, Cosmos Okafor, aged 31 years, and Okechukwu Wisdom, aged 17 years, who were present at the scene.

Neighbor Intervention Turns Fatal

In reaction to witnessing the attack on the mother, Cosmos Okafor and Okechukwu Wisdom allegedly intervened by attacking Chidera Benjamin. During this altercation, Chidera sustained severe injuries and lost consciousness. He was promptly rushed to Kubwa General Hospital for emergency medical treatment.

Tragically, despite the efforts of the medical team at the hospital, Chidera Benjamin was later confirmed dead. The police have stated that both suspects, Cosmos Okafor and Okechukwu Wisdom, were promptly arrested following the incident and are currently in custody awaiting further legal proceedings.

Police Response and Community Advisory

SP Josephine Adeh mentioned that the Commissioner of Police for the FCT Command, CP Miller G. Dantawaye, psc., has expressed his condolences to the bereaved family. He emphasized the importance of adopting peaceful and lawful means to resolve disputes, urging residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

The Commissioner warned that actions taken in moments of anger can lead to tragic and irreversible consequences, as evidenced by this unfortunate event. He reiterated the commitment of the police to ensure justice is served while promoting community safety and adherence to legal protocols.

Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation

The suspects are being held in custody as the police continue their investigations into the case. Upon conclusion of the investigative process, they will be formally charged to court to face the full weight of the law. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with vigilante justice and the critical need for community members to rely on official law enforcement channels during conflicts.

The FCT Police Command has assured the public that they are diligently working to bring closure to this case and prevent similar occurrences in the future through increased awareness and enforcement of legal standards.
