Police Withdraw Opposition to Blord's Bail Application
The Nigerian Police Force has officially withdrawn its counter-affidavit opposing the bail application of cryptocurrency businessman Blord, a significant development that could pave the way for his release from detention. This unexpected move represents a fresh twist in the ongoing legal saga surrounding the prominent figure.
Legal Teams Working Toward Resolution
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore confirmed the development, stating that all parties involved are now seeking an amicable solution to end the dispute. According to Sowore, the legal teams for both sides, including counsel representing social media critic VDM, are now working toward a common goal.
Sowore expressed optimism that the withdrawal of the police's counter-affidavit would make the bail application unopposed, potentially speeding up Blord's release process. "The bail application has been filed already, the police filed a counter and it has now been withdrawn. If we move for his bail, it will be unopposed and we can end all of these," Sowore told journalists.
Background of the Case
Blord, whose real name is Linus Williams Ifejirika, has been remanded at Kuje prison for more than 12 days after being arraigned at the Federal High Court in Abuja earlier this month. The charges against him include:
- Criminal conspiracy
- Impersonation
- Alleged unauthorized use of VDM's image
Following his arraignment, the court ordered his remand at Kuje prison pending the determination of his bail application. His lawyer subsequently filed the bail application on Monday, April 13, setting the stage for legal arguments over whether he should remain in custody.
Path Toward Resolution
With the police now withdrawing their opposition, the legal path toward bail appears clearer. Sowore revealed that parties involved in the case are already working toward a resolution, noting that VDM's lawyer is also his personal attorney.
"When we leave this place we are going straight to Federal High Court to work for his bail date," Sowore stated, indicating immediate action would follow the police's withdrawal of opposition.
Social Media Reactions
The development has sparked various reactions on social media platforms, with users expressing diverse opinions about the case:
- One user questioned VDM's consistency, stating: "I thought VDM is against people using corrupt police to send people to prison, he's doing the same thing right now."
- Another user commented on VDM's legal representation: "VDM has lost his lawyer, he can't even maintain a simple relationship."
- A third user noted the evolving nature of the case: "I don't know who is changing mouth between vdm and him, he retrieved his statement by correcting his self mistake."
Previous Conditions for Resolution
Legit.ng had earlier reported that VDM mentioned specific conditions under which he would be willing to forgive Blord and discontinue the ongoing legal case. The development comes after the Federal High Court ordered Blord's remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre over allegations of impersonation and related charges filed by the activist.
The withdrawal of the police's opposition represents a significant shift in the legal proceedings and suggests that all parties may be moving toward a resolution that could see Blord released from detention in the near future.
