Sowore Resists Transportation in Black Maria After Court Remand Order
Tension erupted at the Federal High Court on Tuesday as human rights activist Omoyele Sowore refused to enter a Black Maria operated by the Department of State Services (DSS) following a court order directing his remand at Kuje Correctional Centre. A viral video captured Sowore objecting to the mode of transportation, insisting he be taken in another vehicle. "You cannot put me in Black Maria," Sowore was heard saying as he resisted the move.
Court Orders Remand Pending Bail Application
The Federal High Court ordered Sowore's detention until Wednesday, June 24, 2026, when his application challenging the revocation of his bail and the issuance of a bench warrant will be heard. The order was issued in a case filed by the DSS against Sowore over allegations of cyberstalking and criminal defamation.
DSS Accuses Sowore of Cyberstalking President Tinubu
The DSS accused Sowore of making a social media post in August 2025 in which he allegedly referred to President Bola Tinubu as a "criminal." This post led to the ongoing legal proceedings. Sowore, a former presidential candidate and activist, has continued to challenge the charges while seeking legal remedies through the court.
Public Attention Intensifies as Legal Battle Continues
The development has attracted significant public attention, with the latest incident adding another layer to the ongoing trial involving the activist and the security agency. Sowore's refusal to enter the Black Maria has sparked discussions on social media about the treatment of detainees and the use of such vehicles.
