In a swift response to a catastrophic fire outbreak, President Bola Tinubu has mandated Vice President Kashim Shettima to head a high-level federal government delegation to Kano State. This decisive action comes after a fierce blaze ravaged the renowned Singer Market, resulting in unprecedented destruction and human distress.
Federal Delegation to Convey Condolences and Support
The delegation, departing from Abuja, is tasked with formally expressing President Tinubu's sympathies to the affected traders and families. This visit underscores the federal government's commitment to providing immediate relief and long-term assistance to those whose livelihoods have been decimated by the inferno.
Key members of the team include Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Senator Kawu Ismaila, and Representative Abubakar Kabir Bichi, who chairs the House Committee on Appropriations. They will be joined by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Dr. Bernard M. Doro, and the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, to coordinate emergency aid and recovery efforts.
Scale of Devastation and Missing Persons
Preliminary reports from the scene paint a harrowing picture of loss. According to Junaid Zakari, Chairman of Singer Market, properties valued at over N5 billion have been obliterated, impacting more than 1,000 businesses. In a tragic turn, seven individuals have been declared missing, with ongoing investigations to ascertain their whereabouts.
Zakari described the incident as unparalleled, noting that four residential buildings housing small-scale enterprises were completely razed. The fire consumed goods, equipment, and valuables, leaving numerous traders without any means of income or sustenance.
Trader Testimonies and Financial Ruin
Affected traders have shared heart-wrenching accounts of their losses. Alhaji Isa Abubakar lamented the destruction of goods worth over N200 million, stating, "From God we come, to Him we shall return. I am here and it is heartbreaking to see goods worth billions of Naira destroyed by fire."
Similarly, Musa Ibrahim reported losses exceeding N340 million, emphasizing, "The fire had consumed everything we had." These testimonies highlight the profound economic and emotional toll on the local business community.
Investigation and Repeated Outbreaks
Emergency responders and security agencies remain on-site as authorities work to determine the cause of the fire. President Tinubu has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the repeated outbreaks, as this marks the second such incident at Singer Market within a two-week period, exacerbating the distress among traders.
Earlier, President Tinubu had telephoned Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to offer condolences, expressing concern over the recurrence of the blaze. The federal delegation's visit is expected to pave the way for not only immediate relief but also strategies to prevent future tragedies and support market rehabilitation.
