Woman Arrested for Attempted Baby Theft at Divine Mercy Hospital
A woman has been arrested after she entered a hospital ward with a nurse's uniform, allegedly with the aim of kidnapping a newborn baby. The incident occurred at Divine Mercy Hospital, Awada, Onitsha, Anambra State.
Suspicious Behavior Leads to Arrest
The woman, alleged to be in the habit of going to hospitals to take children, arrived at the hospital with a nurse's uniform in a polythene bag. Hospital staff started filming her after her actions raised suspicion.
In the video, a doctor, wearing a yellow striped shirt, is seen asking the alleged kidnapper what her mission at the hospital was, but she could not give a reasonable answer. "Your cup is full," hospital staff screamed at her. "Child thief," others added.
New Mother Recounts Encounter
A new mother whose baby the woman allegedly tried to steal spoke up. She said: "She came to ask me if I gave birth to a girl or a boy. I told her boy and she told me congrats. I asked why she asked and she told me she's a nurse, that they just employed her in the hospital. I asked her 'since when?' and told her I've never seen her face in Divine Mercy hospital and she claimed she doesn't do ward rounds."
A voice in the background added that the alleged kidnapper then went outside and was heard making a call, asking the person on the line, "Do you want a boy or a girl." The new mother interjected, claiming that she witnessed her making the call too.
Police Confirm Arrest
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and said the suspect is in custody. "The suspect is currently in our custody, and investigations are ongoing," Ikenga stated.
