Man Shot by Suspected Kidnappers in Military Uniform Dies in Edo State
A young man identified as Christopher has been confirmed dead after being shot by suspected kidnappers in Auchi, near Igbira camp, Edo State. The tragic incident occurred when the attackers, reportedly dressed in military uniforms, targeted Christopher and his partner, abducting the woman while leaving him critically injured.
Police Confirm Details of the Attack
The Edo State Police Command's Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the death in a statement issued to newsmen in Benin. According to Ikoedem, eyewitnesses described the assailants as wearing army camouflage, though she clarified that this does not necessarily mean they were actual soldiers. "I am not saying they are soldiers but they said the people wore army camouflage," she stated.
Christopher was rushed to a health facility after the shooting but later succumbed to his injuries. The police have launched a manhunt to apprehend the suspects and rescue the abducted woman. "Efforts are in top gear to apprehend them and rescue the lady," Ikoedem emphasized, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
Ongoing Security Operations in the Region
In a related development, Ikoedem addressed another attack on the Benin-Ore-Lagos Highway, revealing that police operatives have embarked on bush combing operations to track down criminals. She noted that while one woman with gunshot wounds was rescued, no other victims have been found yet. "Apart from the woman that was rescued with gunshot, no other person has been rescued but we are closing in on them," she said.
Due to security implications, the PPRO refrained from disclosing full details of the ongoing operations. "I can't disclose everything that is being done because of security implications," she explained, underscoring the sensitive nature of the investigations.
This incident adds to the growing concerns over kidnapping and violent crimes in Edo State, with perpetrators sometimes disguising themselves in military attire to evade detection. Authorities continue to urge public vigilance and cooperation in combating such security threats.
