A student of Charterhouse Lagos, widely regarded as the most expensive school in Nigeria, has ignited a fierce online debate after posting a video that offers a glimpse into his daily life at the British independent school located in the Lekki area of Lagos. The clip, shared on X by user @realyobarnub, showcases the school's state-of-the-art facilities and has drawn sharp reactions over the stark contrast between the quality of education available to the wealthy and the poor in the country.
Student's Day Captured on Video
In the video, the unidentified boarding student takes viewers through a typical day, beginning with a visit to the school's medical centre because he felt tired. He then proceeds to the physics laboratory, where he and his classmates have a test on static electricity. Throughout the clip, the student flaunts the modern amenities and well-equipped classrooms that Charterhouse Lagos offers its pupils.
The school, which opened its doors to its first students around September 2024, provides both boarding and day options for primary and secondary education. It is the first British independent school in West Africa and a member of the prestigious Charterhouse family of schools.
Charterhouse Lagos Fees and Facilities
According to the school's official website, annual fees vary by year group. For students in years one and two (primary one and two), the fee is ₦23 million, though founding students pay a reduced rate of ₦16.1 million. For year 12 (SS3) students, the annual fee is ₦35 million, with founding students paying ₦24.5 million. The application fee alone is ₦2 million per child. The X user who shared the video noted that the school's annual tuition fees are approximately ₦46 million, making it the most expensive school in Nigeria.
The video quickly went viral, with many commenters expressing outrage over the educational divide in Nigeria. User @okafor_nna54678 remarked, "This is what nepotism creates a country where the rich keep getting ahead while the poor remain trapped. In places like the US and UK many students are not forced to chase expensive private schools because public schools still offer quality education. But here basic needs like education are designed to favour privilege."
Online Reactions Highlight Inequality
Another user, @Tufo_pa, wrote, "Africans!!! Our selfish and greedy leaders always trying to offer the best for their family whilst they play with the minds of the poor and push them further into poverty." @LucaVelly97 compared the situation to schools in the United States, stating, "We are a 4th world country sha because this is a school in a county in America you can see the public schools with massive facilities during this World Cup but if we have students who don't have roof and chairs in their class then this is a privilege."
@mr__prolific added, "In a working country, every child deserves these basic amenities and this kind of education. But the kids of the elites goes to these schools while the poor kids are in the bushes with bandits for weeks now. Same country." @benintechboy commented, "This is how average secondary school should be like not Nigeria but greedy politicians wouldn't allow it."
Charterhouse Lagos: A Symbol of Privilege
Charterhouse Lagos was built on a once-underdeveloped swamp in the Lekki area, and its construction has been a topic of discussion since its inception. The school's interior photos, previously released on its official website, also trended on social media, with many marveling at its luxurious facilities. The school is part of the Charterhouse family of schools, which has a long-standing reputation for excellence in education.
The student's video has once again brought to the forefront the issue of educational inequality in Nigeria, where the children of the elite have access to world-class amenities while many public schools lack basic infrastructure. As one commenter, @OloyeSomorin, noted, "I spotted a kid on there. The parent hid the identity of the school he attends from followers on Instagram. In this life just do good. Nothing is hidden."
