Lagos Leaders Commit to Protecting National Assets

Lagos Traditional Rulers and Stakeholders Unite to Safeguard Critical National Assets

Traditional rulers in Lagos State, alongside various stakeholders, have made a firm commitment to collaborate with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in the protection of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI). This pledge was articulated during a comprehensive engagement session organized by the Lagos command of the NSCDC, which focused on asset and infrastructure protection across key areas including Obalende, Lagos Island, Mainland, Somolu, and Bariga.

Strong Support from Traditional Institutions

Speaking on behalf of the traditional rulers, the Baale of Orile Somolu, Muftau Akinpelu, lauded the initiative as a positive and necessary step forward. He assured that traditional institutions would actively support the NSCDC divisions within their domains by facilitating operational logistics from the government and other cooperating stakeholders. This commitment underscores the vital role that community leaders play in enhancing security measures at the grassroots level.

Broad Stakeholder Engagement and Pledges

The event saw participation from a diverse array of stakeholders, each offering their support and resources. Mrs Oke Bukola, representing the National Orientation Agency (NOA), promised to intensify public sensitization programs aimed at educating citizens on the importance of protecting CNAI. Meanwhile, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) commended the NSCDC for its efforts in keeping the public informed about its mandates and activities, which are crucial in combating vandalism.

Mr Ibrahim Musa, representing the Scrap Dealer Employers’ Association, issued a call to action for all stakeholders to join forces with the NSCDC in the fight against vandalism. He pledged ongoing collaboration with the Corps and relevant agencies to discipline and expel any members found engaging in illicit activities, thereby ensuring the integrity of their association.

Leadership and Community Involvement

The Area Commander for Area I Command, Assistant Commandant of Corps Samuel Idoko, who oversees the Obalende, Lagos Island, Mainland, Bariga, and Somolu divisions, was present at the meeting along with divisional officers and personnel. They actively addressed pressing questions from participants, demonstrating a hands-on approach to community concerns. Earlier, the State Commandant of NSCDC Lagos State Command, Mr Adedotun Keshinro, emphasized the critical nature of the community engagement initiative, which ran from January 20 to March 31.

Represented by Deputy Commandant of Corps Kolawole Agbetiloye, head of the Critical National Assets and Infrastructure Department, Keshinro highlighted that the engagement aimed to bring campaigns against vandalism, illegal dredging, illegal mining, and illegal scrap dealings closer to the people. He specifically charged the Scrap Dealers Association, under Ibrahim Musa’s leadership, to regulate its members’ activities strictly and ensure compliance to protect assets effectively. Keshinro advised that erring members should face serious consequences, including deregistration, to prevent tarnishing the association’s reputation.

This collaborative effort marks a significant stride towards securing Nigeria’s vital infrastructure, leveraging local leadership and stakeholder cooperation to foster a safer and more resilient community.
