Nigeria and Türkiye Forge Strategic Military Training Partnership
In a significant development for international defense collaboration, Nigeria and Türkiye have officially sealed an agreement to train 200 Nigerian Special Forces personnel. The announcement was made by Nigeria's Minister of Defense, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), during the 5th Antalya Diplomacy Forum (ADF 2026) in Antalya, Türkiye.
High-Level Talks Yield Immediate Deployment Plans
Gen. Musa disclosed the details on Saturday, following productive discussions with his Turkish counterpart, Yaşar Güler. He confirmed that Türkiye has already approved a training quota for the Nigerian personnel, with deployment set to occur without delay upon his return to Nigeria. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to bolster Nigeria's defense capabilities and enhance its military readiness.
"We have a Special Forces training agreement. Türkiye has agreed to give us 200 Special Forces trainees, so as soon as I return, we are sending them here for training," Musa stated. He further emphasized that this partnership will extend beyond training, including joint military exercises scheduled for later in the year.
Expanding Defense Cooperation Beyond Training
The agreement also encompasses joint defense equipment production and the transfer of military technology, marking a deepening of bilateral ties. Musa highlighted the long-standing relationship between the two nations, noting, "since 1960, Türkiye has been like family to Nigeria." He pointed out that Türkiye's extensive defense experience, particularly in combating terrorism for over 40 years, offers valuable lessons for Nigeria, which has been engaged in asymmetric warfare against insurgency for approximately 17 years.
During the meeting with the Turkish Minister of Defense, both parties exchanged ideas on strengthening their defense relationship. "Türkiye has improved dramatically in the production of military hardware. Nigeria is still developing, and we have agreed that we are going to partner together so that we have a co-production of some of these items," Musa explained.
Forum Context and Future Prospects
The 5th Antalya Diplomacy Forum, themed "Mapping Tomorrow, Managing Uncertainties," commenced on Friday and has attracted participation from world leaders, ministers, and diplomats. This platform provided an ideal setting for advancing the Nigeria-Türkiye defense dialogue.
Looking ahead, Musa outlined a comprehensive roadmap for collaboration: "Because of that, we will move into training, production, and improving on our defence, industrial production, and exchange of officers and soldiers." This multifaceted approach aims to leverage Türkiye's expertise to enhance Nigeria's defense infrastructure and operational effectiveness.
The deal underscores a strategic shift towards more integrated defense partnerships, focusing on capacity building and technological advancement. It reflects Nigeria's commitment to modernizing its military forces through international cooperation, while Türkiye expands its role as a key defense partner in Africa.
