According to local resident Mohammed Baba, who spoke to Daily Trust, the victims were journeying from Zaria in Kaduna State to Lagos when their truck, which was carrying both goods and passengers, made contact with a high-tension power line. The collision happened as the driver attempted to navigate around potholes on the road, highlighting the perilous conditions of the infrastructure.
The high-tension cable in question is part of the network connecting to Agaie, and this is not an isolated incident. Baba noted that vehicles have previously come into contact with the same wire due to its loosened state, which poses a significant hazard to heavy-duty vehicles traversing the area.
Immediate Aftermath and Rescue Efforts
In this particular tragedy, the initial contact with the wire electrocuted one individual, and the current subsequently affected the others, leading to five fatalities. Three additional passengers sustained severe burns and are receiving medical attention.
Following the accident, the bodies of the deceased and the injured were evacuated to the police station in Badeggi. Authorities utilized the victims' mobile phones to notify their families, a somber task that underscores the human toll of this disaster.
