LASTMA Rescues Hit-and-Run Victim on Lekki-Epe Expressway

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has successfully rescued and evacuated a female victim who sustained fractures to her arm and leg in a hit-and-run accident at the EFF Bus Stop, inward Marwa, along the Lekki-Epe Expressway in Lagos State.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, involved an unidentified motorist who allegedly knocked down the victim and fled the scene immediately, leaving her critically injured and exposed on the busy expressway.

Swift Response by LASTMA Officers

In a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, and shared through the agency's official X handle, LASTMA said its personnel, who were on traffic monitoring duty in the corridor, swiftly responded to the emergency. According to the statement, officers promptly secured the victim from further danger, evacuated her from the carriageway, and alerted the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).

The officers also implemented immediate traffic control measures to prevent secondary crashes and ensure smooth vehicular movement in the area. LASAMBUS officials later arrived at the scene and evacuated the victim to the General Hospital, Odan, where she was admitted for urgent medical care and further evaluation.

Condemnation of Hit-and-Run Incidents

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed concern over the rising cases of hit-and-run incidents in the state, describing such behaviour as both morally wrong and legally punishable. He stressed that every road user has a responsibility to protect human life and condemned the act of fleeing accident scenes, noting that it undermines public safety and the rule of law.

Bakare-Oki also commended the cooperation between LASTMA and LASAMBUS personnel, describing their swift response as crucial in saving the victim's life and restoring order along the affected corridor. He urged motorists to exercise caution, comply with traffic regulations, and promptly report road accidents and emergencies through appropriate channels to enable quick intervention by relevant authorities.
