The Oyo State Police Command has launched a statewide enforcement operation targeting fake, obscured, and unmarked vehicle number plates as part of renewed efforts to curb crime and enhance public safety across the state.

The operation, which began on Thursday, also focuses on vehicles and motorcycles operating with covered, altered, or unauthorized identification plates, as well as other vehicle-related infractions linked to criminal activities.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, noting that the exercise is part of broader strategies to strengthen security architecture and reduce violent crime in the state.
Compliance and Enforcement
According to him, the enforcement is aimed at ensuring strict compliance with lawful vehicle identification standards and improving the ability of security agencies to track and prevent criminal activities. He said individuals found in violation of the directives would be arrested, while offending vehicles and motorcycles would be impounded in line with extant laws and operational procedures.
“The enforcement operation is designed to ensure full compliance with vehicle identification regulations and enhance public safety. Any person found violating these directives will be promptly arrested and their vehicles impounded accordingly,” the statement read.
Enhanced Security Measures
Ayanlade added that the Command would intensify stop-and-search operations, intelligence-led patrols, and coordinated raids on identified criminal hotspots across the state. He noted that there would also be increased police visibility and strategic deployment of personnel in both urban and rural areas as part of efforts to deter criminal activities and improve rapid response capabilities.
According to the police, the measures form part of a broader security framework aimed at strengthening public confidence in law enforcement operations and ensuring a safer environment for residents.

The Command urged members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and cooperative during the exercise, stressing that the operations were being carried out in the interest of public safety. It assured residents that all enforcement activities would be conducted professionally, lawfully, and with full respect for human rights.
The police also appreciated the support and understanding of residents, reaffirming its commitment to sustaining proactive policing and crime prevention strategies across Oyo State.
