The Oyo State Government has alerted residents across the state's 33 local government areas to an elevated risk of flash flooding this month, following a High Impact-Based Forecast issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet). The warning was delivered on Monday in Ibadan by the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto.
Forecast Details and Risks
Aderinto explained that forecasts indicate the likelihood of high-intensity thunderstorms and heavy surface runoff, which could trigger temporary flooding in communities and on major roads. He emphasized that residents must take precautionary measures to minimize risks associated with the anticipated weather conditions. "High-intensity thunderstorms and heavy surface runoff could result in temporary road overflows and community flooding," he stated.
Government Mitigation Efforts
The commissioner noted that the state government has intensified clearing of critical drainage channels and waterways as part of efforts to mitigate flooding impacts during the rainy season. However, he stressed that government intervention alone would not suffice without cooperation from residents. "While the state government has intensified clearing of critical drainage channels across the state, residents must also play their part by ensuring that drains, gutters, and waterways around their homes and communities are free of plastic bottles, silt, and other waste materials that obstruct water flow," Aderinto said.
Safety Warnings and Precautions
Aderinto cautioned motorists and pedestrians against attempting to drive or walk through flooded roads, especially during heavy rainfall. "Motorists and pedestrians should avoid driving or walking through flooded roads, particularly at night, as flash floods can be deceptive and powerful enough to sweep away vehicles and individuals," he warned. He also called on residents to support ongoing government efforts to protect lives and property, while warning against activities that could worsen flooding situations.
Environmental Violations and Sanctions
The commissioner cautioned individuals and property developers against unauthorized dredging and construction activities that alter natural water channels or obstruct drainage routes. According to him, such practices violate environmental regulations and will attract sanctions under existing laws. He also urged residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to take proactive measures, such as elevating valuable household items, important documents, and electrical appliances above floor level.
Protecting Vulnerable Individuals
Aderinto called on parents and guardians to ensure children and other vulnerable persons remain indoors during heavy rainfall to reduce exposure to danger. He assured residents that the state government has activated emergency response and contingency plans to respond swiftly to any flood-related incidents. He urged the public to remain calm, vigilant, and safety-conscious throughout the rainy season while adhering to all advisories from relevant authorities.
