Suspected gunmen killed three members of a local vigilante group on Saturday night in Sabon-Layi community, Gwol District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Plateau State. The attack occurred around 10 p.m., raising fresh concerns over persistent insecurity in the region.
Attack details and community response
According to community sources, the gunmen stormed the community under the cover of darkness and specifically targeted vigilantes who were on duty. The spokesperson for the Berom Youth Moulders, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the incident, describing the killings as a direct attack on the community's efforts to protect lives and property.
“The attackers came and killed these men who were risking their lives to safeguard the community,” Tengwong said. He noted that the slain vigilantes were members of a local security outfit established to defend residents against recurring attacks in the area.
Security concerns and calls for action
Tengwong lamented the deteriorating security situation in Barkin Ladi, stating that residents continue to live in fear despite the presence of security personnel. He called on the Plateau State Government and the Federal Government to strengthen security in the area by deploying additional personnel to prevent further attacks.
The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Plateau State, where communities often rely on local vigilantes for protection amid insufficient official security presence.
