FRSC Cautions Motorists on Pothole Hazards During Rainy Season
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ogun State Command has issued a critical warning to motorists, urging them to slow down and exercise extreme caution when approaching potholes on highways. This advisory aims to prevent avoidable crashes during the ongoing rainy season, as disclosed by Sector Commander Oludare Ogunjobi in a statement to newsmen on Monday in Ota.
Essential Safety Measures for Wet Conditions
Ogunjobi emphasized that the wet and slippery roads during this season make it difficult for drivers to control their vehicles, necessitating a reminder of basic safety protocols. He advised motorists to maintain a double or triple distance between their vehicles and those ahead to ensure adequate braking time. "The FRSC is appealing to motorists to apply common-sense speed limits by reducing their speed below the posted limit when it rains," he stated.
Additionally, the commander highlighted the importance of proactive vehicle maintenance to prevent unnecessary loss of lives. Drivers are urged to inspect their tyres for wear and ensure their vehicles are weather-ready by checking essential components, such as windscreen wipers, before any journey. Replacing worn-out wiper blades immediately is crucial for maintaining clear visibility on the road.
Comprehensive Vehicle Checks and Flood Avoidance
Ogunjobi further stressed the need for motorists to verify that all headlamps, brake lights, braking systems, and indicators are functioning properly to stay safe during heavy rain. He also admonished drivers to avoid flood-prone areas and refrain from crossing running waters or flooded roads to prevent crashes. In cases of reduced visibility, he recommended parking safely off the road and waiting for the rain to subside.
The commander referenced predictions from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency in April, which forecast a variable rainfall pattern for the year, with Ogun State expected to experience a longer rainy season. Recent alerts from the Federal Ministry of Environment have also highlighted Ogun as one of the states at risk of heavy rainfall and flash flooding during this period, underscoring the urgency of these safety measures.
