Kayla Gomez, a 22-year-old female boxer who recently made her professional debut, has been arrested for allegedly assaulting her aunt during a family Fourth of July party in Anthony, Texas, just outside El Paso.
Incident Details
According to a criminal complaint obtained by the El Paso Times, the altercation began over decorations set up for Gomez's baby daughter's birthday celebration. The argument turned physical, and Gomez allegedly struck the relative in the head with both fists, leaving her with visible injuries. The aunt reported that she could not recall the exact number of punches because the blows caused her to black out.
Police responded to the scene around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and found the aunt with a bloody upper lip and pain on both sides of her face. She declined medical transport to the hospital but expressed a desire to press charges.
Boxer's Denial
Gomez denied responsibility for the assault, stating, "There are two sides to every story, and I didn’t hit anybody." She commented on local news outlet KFOX14’s Instagram post about the incident, adding, "Also, she wasn’t family; that was a crazy step-aunt who attacked me with my baby in my arms on her birthday." However, witnesses told police that Gomez was the aggressor.
Legal Consequences
Gomez was arrested for assault and booked at the El Paso County jail. She was released on Sunday after posting a $2,500 bond. The case remains under investigation.
Boxing Background
Gomez had just made her professional boxing debut on June 19 in California, following a successful amateur career that included 18 national championships. She also qualified for the U.S. Olympic boxing team in 2021, according to KFOX14. Her promising career now faces uncertainty due to the legal proceedings.
