Iran Demands FIFA Security Guarantees for 2026 World Cup Participation

Iran has officially announced that it will await concrete security guarantees from FIFA before confirming its participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to reports from Anadolu. The statement comes amid ongoing diplomatic tensions and unresolved logistical issues surrounding the tournament.

Unresolved Venue Relocation Request

Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali emphasized that Iran's request to FIFA to relocate its group stage matches from the United States to Mexico remains active and unanswered. "Our request to FIFA to relocate Iran's games from the U.S. to Mexico is still valid, but we have not yet received a response," Donyamali stated. "If accepted, Iran's participation in the World Cup will be certain. However, FIFA has not yet responded."

Despite the uncertainty, Donyamali confirmed that the Iranian national football team has been diligently continuing its World Cup preparations. "As the Minister of Sports, together with the Iranian Football Federation, we will keep the football team ready for the World Cup," he added. "However, the final decision will be made by our government."

Criticism of U.S. Security Concerns

Donyamali strongly criticized recent warnings from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who suggested it would be unsafe for the Iranian team to participate in the 2026 World Cup. "Trump is making very contradictory statements; what he says is very inconsistent," Donyamali remarked. "He is making morally and ethically unbalanced statements."

The minister underscored that, according to FIFA regulations, host countries are obligated to provide security for all participating teams. "While this is the case, according to FIFA's relevant regulations, security must be provided in the country concerned," he explained. "However, the World Cup is taking place soon, and providing guarantees during this period is questionable."

FIFA's Responsibility and Low Participation Odds

Donyamali asserted that FIFA bears ultimate responsibility for ensuring the safety of national teams competing abroad. "The security of any national team participating in the World Cup abroad should be guaranteed by FIFA; if not, FIFA should not allow the World Cup matches to be played in the U.S.," he declared.

Given the current circumstances, Donyamali indicated that Iran's participation in matches scheduled for the United States is highly unlikely without firm security assurances. "Under these conditions, the possibility of Iran participating in the World Cup matches in the U.S. is very low," he stated. "But, if the relevant security guarantees are provided, our government will make the decision on Iran's participation in the World Cup."

Tournament Details and Implications

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19. Iran is scheduled to play its group stage matches in the United States, making the security guarantees a critical factor in its final decision.

This development highlights the complex interplay between sports, politics, and international relations, as Iran seeks to balance athletic aspirations with national security concerns. The outcome could significantly impact the tournament's dynamics and the global football community's perception of safety protocols.
