A Nigerian football fan has sparked widespread discussion online after highlighting a series of disturbing incidents during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final match between Nigeria's Super Eagles and Morocco.
Viral Video Reveals Alleged Distraction Tactics
The TikTok user, posting on the account @ourafricanfootball, shared a video compilation from the high-stakes match played on January 16, 2026. The footage focuses on Nigeria's first-choice goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali.
According to the narrator, Nwabali had placed a towel just outside the boundary of the pitch, a common practice for goalkeepers to keep their gloves dry during play. However, the video allegedly shows an individual, described as "someone not involved in the match," entering the pitch area and taking the towel away.
The situation reportedly repeated itself. After retrieving a second towel, Nwabali placed it in a similar spot, only for another person to approach and remove it as well. The fan emphasized that goalkeepers are permitted to have towels off the pitch, as they do not interfere with the game itself.
Breach of Security and Sportsmanship
The individual behind the video expressed deep concern over the lack of security in one of the match's most regulated zones. He argued that the repeated actions were a clear distraction to the goalkeeper and constituted unsportsmanlike behavior.
"You can see clearly, the moment they took the towels off the pitch, it distracted the goalkeeper to an extent," he stated. "This is unsportsmanlike. I’m really concerned that something like this happened in a high-profile tournament like the AFCON, and I feel this shouldn’t have happened in the first place."
His central argument was that such incidents should be impossible at an elite continental tournament, pointing to a potential failure in pitch-side security protocols.
Mixed Reactions from Football Fans
The revelation triggered a flood of reactions from social media users, with opinions sharply divided.
Many users condemned the act, seeing it as a deliberate ploy. THE SAGOE commented, "This is very bad... deliberate distraction." Others, like Sibo, connected it to broader perceptions: "That's why I want Senegal to beat Morocco in the final. they always play dirty." El_Lera added, "Am not a Nigerian fan but this is interference.. Morocco has had a crazy ride through this AFCON ,they are cheats."
Some questioned why match officials did not intervene. Hoks pointed out, "The ref missed this and assistant ref also didn't see this. In addition the VAR also didn't see this." MAKE IT RAIN suggested, "The keeper should have complain to the referee."
However, a significant number of respondents dismissed the incident's impact on the game's outcome. CONSTANTINE wrote, "I was behind nigeria, you guys performed poorly the whole game, i was disappointed. what does a towel has to do with those poor passes and failed tact." Echoing this, OBA Toyin of D Tribe of Yagba asked, "And the towel stopped Nigeria from winning??? stopped the keeper from saving penalty or stopped the players from scoring???" musa@100 simply stated, "That's not right but Nigeria lost fair and square."
The controversy added another layer to a tournament already under scrutiny for refereeing decisions, with a separate report citing a former FIFA official's criticism of referee Daniel Laryea's performance in the match.
