Supercomputer Predicts South Africa vs South Korea World Cup Clash

Opta's supercomputer has released its prediction for the decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup Group A match between South Africa and South Korea, scheduled for June 25. The simulation, based on 25,000 pre-game scenarios, heavily favors South Korea, giving them a 56.2% chance of winning. A draw is projected at 23.5%, while a South African victory stands at only 20.3%.

Group A Standings and Knockout Hopes

Co-hosts Mexico have already secured their spot in the knockout stage. The remaining three teams—South Korea, Czechia, and South Africa—still have a chance to advance. South Korea currently sits second with three points, following a win over Czechia and a loss to Mexico. Czechia and South Africa each have one point after their 1-1 draw on matchday two.

South Africa can finish second and join Mexico in the knockout stage if they defeat South Korea and Mexico secures at least a draw against Czechia in the other match. Even if Czechia beats Mexico, South Africa would finish third but with four points, they would likely qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.

Key Player Absences and Returns

South Africa will be without midfielder Teboho Mokoena, who is suspended after accumulating two yellow cards. However, the return of Siphephelo Sithole provides a boost to Hugo Broos' squad. The two teams have never met in any previous friendly or competitive match, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the encounter.

Broos Confirms Readiness

South Africa manager Hugo Broos acknowledged the challenge ahead, stating, "This will be a difficult game. We have to win, and they need a draw to be in the next round. Our choice is more simple, we have to win, and that's what we're going for." He admitted that inexperience affected his team in their opening match against Mexico, but noted improvement against Czechia. "We were a bit overwhelmed by the occasion in our first game because we are a team with a lack of experience in such games, and that's why we didn't play how we wanted to play against Mexico. However, the game against Czechia was already much better, and now the motivation is even bigger," Broos added.

Troost-Ekong Sends Message

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong, who faced Bafana Bafana during World Cup qualifiers, has expressed support for South Africa. He believes they can reach the knockout stage for the first time in their history.
