Super Eagles right-back Ola Aina has opened up about his decision to represent Nigeria over England at the senior international level. Born and raised in London, Aina came through Chelsea's Cobham Academy and played for England's youth teams before switching his allegiance to Nigeria in 2017.
Early Decision for Nigeria
Aina made the switch at the age of 20, unlike some players who delay their choice until later in their careers. He has since earned 48 caps for Nigeria and featured in three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. His best friend Alex Iwobi and former captain William Troost-Ekong are among others who made similar early decisions.
What Aina Said
Speaking to Forest TV, Aina shared: "Born and raised in London, I decided to play for Nigeria. It was just a decision that I made when I was about 20. That's where my parents are from; that's my origin. The opportunity came for me, and I thought it was the right one at that time, so I took it with both hands, and I'm here today."
He added that his family takes great pride in his Super Eagles career: "My family are very proud of me, especially when I wear the Super Eagles shirt. They love it more than me. Even for me, it's a privilege; it's an honour. It's amazing to actually play for them."
Career Highlights
Aina participated in the 2019, 2021, and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, though he missed the 2025 edition in Morocco due to an injury sustained during international duty against South Africa in September 2025. His competitors at right-back, Bright Osayi-Samuel and Ryan Alebiosu, are also England-born players who chose Nigeria.
World Cup Miss
The former Chelsea star has yet to play in a FIFA World Cup. He narrowly missed out on the Russia 2018 squad, and Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2022 and 2026 tournaments.
AFCON 2023 Final
Earlier, Aina revealed his parents' reaction to his performance in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final against Ivory Coast. Although he was one of the tournament's standout players, he struggled against Simon Adingra, who bypassed him and assisted both of Ivory Coast's goals.
