CBN Issues Urgent Alert on Fraudsters' New Tactics to Steal from Bank Customers

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued a strong warning to the public regarding the circulation of fraudulent messages, emails, and online communications that falsely claim to originate from or be associated with the apex bank. This alert aims to protect Nigerians from cybercriminals who are using deceptive tactics to spread misinformation and gain unauthorized access to personal and financial accounts.

Details of the Fraudulent Scheme

In a statement released on Wednesday, April 22, and signed by Hakama Sidi Ali, the Acting Director of Corporate Communications, the CBN explained that these fraudulent communications typically prompt recipients to click on malicious links. These messages often contain false information about the bank's leadership, licensing activities, and policy decisions, with the ultimate goal of hacking personal accounts and misleading unsuspecting individuals into revealing sensitive data.

The CBN emphasized that its official website remains www.cbn.gov.ng and urged Nigerians to rely only on verified sources for all official information. The bank is continuously strengthening its cybersecurity frameworks in collaboration with relevant agencies to safeguard the Nigerian financial system against digital fraud and cyber threats.

Public Advisory and Safety Measures

To combat this growing threat, the CBN has strongly advised members of the public to take the following precautions:

  • Refrain from clicking on links or sharing personal information on suspicious websites.
  • Verify the authenticity of all CBN communications through the official website and recognized media outlets.
  • Report any suspected fraudulent sites, emails, or messages to law enforcement authorities immediately.

The statement from the CBN reads in part: "The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) wishes to alert members of the public to the circulation of fraudulent messages, emails, and online communications purporting to originate from or be associated with the Bank, which are intended to misinform members of the public. These fraudulent messages, which prompt recipients to click links, peddle false information about the Bank's leadership, licensing, and policy issues, and are intended to hack personal accounts."

Related Developments: Ecobank's Warning

In a related development, Ecobank Nigeria has also issued a warning to its customers about new cyber threats. The bank highlighted that scammers are creating clone banking apps and deceptive pop-ups that mimic legitimate banking platforms. Once installed, these fraudulent apps can access users' phones and steal sensitive information, including PINs, passwords, and one-time passwords (OTPs), which can then be used to carry out unauthorized fund transfers.

Ecobank's public advisory urges customers to remain vigilant and only use official banking channels to protect their financial assets. This underscores the broader issue of cybersecurity in Nigeria's banking sector, as financial institutions work to combat increasingly sophisticated fraud schemes.

The CBN's alert serves as a critical reminder for all Nigerians to exercise caution online and prioritize cybersecurity measures to prevent financial losses and identity theft.
