Remi Aiyede Emerges 21st NAPSA President

Professor Remi Aiyede, a renowned political scientist and former Head of the Department of Political Science at the University of Ibadan (UI), has been elected as the 21st President of the Nigerian Political Science Association (NAPSA). His emergence was through a consensus arrangement during the association’s conference and business meeting, which brought together political scientists from universities and research institutions across the country.

Electoral Process

The electoral process was overseen by an electoral committee chaired by Professor Alade Fawole, a former lecturer in the Department of International Relations at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, who currently serves in the Department of Political Science at the University of Ilesa, Osun State.

Key Positions Secured

In line with the association’s tradition that the host institution occupies three principal offices, Professor Olubukola Stella Adesina and Dr Stephen Lafenwa also emerged by consensus as Treasurer and General Secretary, respectively. Other members of the new executive council include Professor Murtala Mohammed as Vice President, Professor Robert Dode as Assistant Secretary, Professor Yusuf Musa as Financial Secretary, and Professor Rahanat Lawal as Auditor. Additionally, Professor Ike Alumona was elected as Public Relations Officer (PRO), Professor Jaja Nwanegbo as Director of Research, and Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Nasiru as Legal Adviser. The immediate past president, Professor Hassan Saliu, became Ex-Officio I, while Dr Ejura Egwumi assumed the role of Ex-Officio II.

Hosting Rights for 2027 Conference

Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAU), Ayingba, Kogi State, which participated in the conference with a delegation of 25 members, secured the hosting rights for the association’s 2027 annual conference. The university also pledged to sponsor the event, a development that was welcomed by members of the association.

Notable Attendees

The business meeting was attended by notable elders and distinguished members of the association, including Emeritus Professor Bayo Adekanye, Emeritus Professor John Ayoade, and Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, Professor Tunji Olaopa. The new leadership is expected to steer the affairs of the association and deepen research, scholarship, and policy engagement in political science across Nigeria.
