Federal Government Unveils 'Snacks for Thought' Initiative to Enhance Child Nutrition and Educational Performance
The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially introduced the "Snacks for Thought" program, also known as PBAT FEEDS, as a strategic breakfast component of the Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme (RH-NHGSFP). This initiative is specifically designed to improve learning outcomes by addressing child nutrition deficiencies, with a focus on providing nutritious morning meals to school children before academic activities commence.
Addressing Critical Barriers to Education
During the launch ceremony held at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation in Abuja, Dr. Princess Aderemi F. Adebowale, the National Programme Manager of RH-NHGSFP, emphasized that "Snacks for Thought" represents a decisive step toward strengthening Nigeria's human capital foundation. "The more developed your knowledge base is, the smarter you are — but you cannot be smarter than your knowledge base," she stated, highlighting the intrinsic link between nutrition and cognitive development.
Dr. Adebowale clarified that this initiative extends beyond mere feeding intervention, positioning it as a comprehensive national development strategy that integrates nutrition, education, and productivity. She elaborated on the expected benefits, noting that the program aims to improve student concentration and cognitive performance, increase school attendance and retention rates, strengthen local agricultural value chains through structured procurement processes, and empower women, youth, and smallholder farmers across the country.

The launch also featured the introduction of the "Adopt-a-School" platform under the Snacks for Thought initiative. This platform provides opportunities for government institutions, private sector organizations, and development partners to directly support school feeding efforts and expand program reach nationwide. The event attracted a diverse gathering of ministers, National Assembly members, Directors-General, Managing Directors, development partners, and key stakeholders, demonstrating strong institutional alignment and national commitment to this cause.
