A Nigerian man, Oron Godswill Edwin, has shared his inspiring journey from being the best graduating student at Rivers State University to becoming a dispatch rider. Despite his academic excellence, he did not secure a corporate job and turned to dispatch riding, which he has now turned into a brand through vlogging his deliveries.
Academic Struggles and Success
During an interview with BBC Pidgin, Oron disclosed that he was the best graduating student in his department at Rivers State University, Port Harcourt. He funded his education by working as a night-shift security guard, often reading for exams while on duty. He recalled, 'There were days I’d have two exam papers and still go for my night shift security job. I would be at the back of the post reading, and my supervisor would come and say, "Oron, Oron! You are here reading? What if a thief climbs the fence at the back and something gets stolen?"'
Transition to Dispatch Riding
Despite his academic success, Oron did not receive a corporate job offer. He then became a dispatch rider and started vlogging his daily deliveries under the name 'Scenic Rides.' This gained him international followers from places like Canada, who asked him to show areas like Sangana. He said, 'I realised that these scenic rides were what people wanted, so I stayed consistent.'
Future Plans
Oron aims to expand his current operation into a major national logistics firm in Nigeria. He is determined to grow his brand and create a successful business from his hustle.
Public Reactions
The video of his story stirred reactions on social media. Comments included: 'God bless his hussling,' 'You're brilliant. Congratulations on your effort,' and 'Keep going bro.' Many praised his resilience and hard work.
