Anglican Church Calls for Credible Elections and Action on National Issues
The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), specifically the Kwara State Diocese, has issued a strong appeal to the Federal Government, emphasizing the critical need for credible, free, and fair elections in 2027. This call was made during the conclusion of the first session of the Diocese's 18th Synod held in Ilorin, highlighting elections as a fundamental pathway to establishing a stable socio-political and economic foundation for Nigeria.
In a communiqué jointly signed by the President of the Synod, Rt. Revd. (Dr) S.T.G. Adewole, and the Chairman of the Communiqué Drafting Committee, Ven. (Prof.) A.S. Idowu, the Synod underscored that free and fair elections serve as the true benchmark of any genuine democracy. The church stressed that ensuring electoral integrity is essential for fostering trust in governance and promoting national development.
Methodist Church Appeals for Infrastructure and Safety in Oyo
In a related development, the Methodist Church Nigeria has directed an appeal to the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, urging immediate action to address persistent safety and infrastructure concerns. The church highlighted the issue of traders hawking along the Agbeni–Ogunpa Road near the Cathedral premises in Agbeni, Ibadan, citing significant safety risks and traffic congestion that affect both churchgoers and the broader community.
Additionally, the Methodist Church called for the tarring and proper maintenance of the road along the Archbishop's residence at College Crescent, Mafohun, Molete, noting that this route serves vital ecclesiastical and community purposes. This appeal was detailed in a communiqué issued at the end of the 64th yearly synod of the Diocese of Ibadan, held at the Methodist Church Nigeria, Trinity, Onireke, Ibadan, from April 16 to 19, 2026.
The communiqué, signed by the Synod Secretary, Very Rev. Davidson Olumide Aluko, and the Diocesan Lay President, Olasumbo Adeola Anifowose, commended Governor Makinde for the achievements recorded under his administration so far and offered prayers for a strong finish to his tenure. However, it also raised pressing concerns about the rising cost of living, youth unemployment, and security challenges impacting residents.
Broader Calls for Governance and Security Reforms
The synod further urged the Federal Government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to take decisive action against the escalating spate of kidnapping and killings across Nigeria, with particular emphasis on the severe situations in Benue and Plateau states. The church warned that such insecurity has grave implications for food security and the sanctity of human life, calling for enhanced measures to protect citizens.
Moreover, the church appealed to authorities at all governmental levels to prioritize job creation, improve access to essential services like healthcare and education, and promote transparency and accountability in governance. These recommendations aim to address systemic issues and foster a more equitable and secure society for all Nigerians.
