Rotary Decries Misinformation Hindering Global Polio Eradication Efforts
Rotary Decries Misinformation in Polio Fight

Rotary International has voiced deep concern over the detrimental impact of misinformation, religious beliefs, and insecurity on its global campaign to eradicate polio. John Hewko, the General-Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of Rotary International, raised these issues during a media briefing in Benin on Tuesday, held in preparation for the upcoming District 9141 three-day conference.

Financial Commitment and Progress

Hewko disclosed that Rotary has invested over $3 billion in the fight against polio since its inception. He noted that through vaccination efforts spearheaded by Rotary and its partners, polio has been eliminated worldwide except in Pakistan and Afghanistan, along with a few other regions facing similar challenges. He emphasized Rotary's unwavering dedication to continue the battle until polio is completely eradicated.

Media's Role in Countering Misinformation

The CEO highlighted the critical role of the media in disseminating accurate information about the polio vaccine. He stated, "That is why you, the media, are so important to also work with us to get the message out that the vaccine is safe, it's effective. We need to vaccinate everybody around the world until there are no more cases." Hewko stressed that physical presence is essential for vaccination, as it requires administering two drops of the vaccine directly to each child, a process that cannot be conducted remotely.

Challenges of Under-Vaccination

Hewko lamented that in countries where misinformation and other obstacles are prevalent, under-vaccination rates remain high. He explained that Rotary employs various strategies to overcome these barriers, such as vaccinating children at border crossings. He reiterated, "The issue of misinformation is a big problem."

Local Impact and Empowerment

Earlier, Rotarian Anthony Woghiren, the Rotary Governor of District 9141—which encompasses Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, and Rivers states—highlighted that beyond vaccination, Rotary has empowered underprivileged individuals through skill acquisition programs. This multifaceted approach aims to improve community well-being and support long-term development.
