Peter Obi to Join ADC on Dec 31, 2027 Election Strategy Takes Shape
Peter Obi Set to Join ADC Ahead of 2027 Election

In a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, strong indications confirm that Peter Gregory Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, has finalised plans to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Enugu Declaration Rally Set for December 31

Multiple sources familiar with the ongoing opposition coalition discussions have disclosed that arrangements for Obi's official entry into the ADC are at an advanced stage. According to a report by The Punch on Sunday, December 28, a top ADC official in Abuja confirmed that Obi will hold a declaration rally in Enugu State on Wednesday, December 31.

The official stated that Enugu, often regarded as the political capital of the South-East geopolitical zone, was chosen for the symbolic declaration. This move is seen as Obi positioning himself as a regional representative, rather than just a candidate from his home state of Anambra.

Party structures are reportedly being aligned to accommodate Obi's substantial political base and the wider 'Obidient' movement, signalling a significant merger of forces within the opposition.

Consultations and Allegiance to the Coalition

The development follows a period of intense consultations. Sources revealed that after the ADC leadership asked Obi to make a definitive decision earlier in December, the former Anambra State governor met with the party's national chairman, David Mark, to renew his commitment to the coalition.

This meeting is believed to have been pivotal in convincing Obi to finalise his move. A party source, while acknowledging that formal notification is still pending, affirmed the authenticity of the plans, stating: "We are aware that Peter Obi is making plans to declare for the ADC on December 31 in Enugu. Although he has yet to formally inform the party, the plans are genuine."

Obi's loyalists and supporters have reportedly begun preparations for the high-profile defection event.

ADC's Growing Profile and Official Stance

The ADC has recently emerged as a formidable hub for opposition figures aiming to challenge the ruling party in 2027. The party has already welcomed other heavyweight politicians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai. These leaders have consistently echoed a unified goal: to democratically unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next presidential election.

When contacted for confirmation, the ADC's national spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, maintained a cautious position. He stated, "The point is that there is no official announcement yet. But consultations are ongoing." This suggests that while the groundwork is laid, formalities are still being observed.

This potential move is part of Obi's broader political consultations, which recently included a visit to former military ruler, General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd). Obi described that discussion as focusing on national unity, security, and improving the welfare of Nigerians.

The anticipated defection of Peter Obi to the ADC marks a critical juncture in Nigeria's opposition politics, setting the stage for a highly contested 2027 presidential race.
