Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq's administration has achieved significant progress, but the 2027 election offers a chance to further strengthen societal fabric. In the All Progressives Congress (APC), the debate over the next gubernatorial candidate is intensifying. I argue that Kwara North should produce the next governor for reasons of equity, loyalty, and strategic advantage.
Why Kwara North Deserves the Ticket
Kwara North has consistently delivered bloc votes for the APC since 2019. In the 2019 election, 31.8% of Governor AbdulRazaq's votes came from the region; in 2023, that share rose to 34.3%, even when the opposition picked its candidate from there. This loyalty deserves recognition. Meanwhile, Kwara Central would have governed for 20 years by 2027, and Kwara South held the seat from 2011 to 2019. Kwara North has never had the opportunity.
Claims that Kwara North lacks numbers or competent candidates are unverified. Such narratives risk creating a permanent political underclass, which is not conducive to harmony. As the Yoruba say, ajoje odun b'enikan oni — monopolies breed bitterness.
Strategic Considerations
Picking a candidate outside Kwara North could alienate the entire region, handing the opposition an advantage. While Kwara Central has the largest voting strength, much of Ilorin's population includes migrants from other parts of Kwara and Nigeria. This demographic mix differs from the ethnically contiguous North, dominated by Baruba/Bokobaru and Nupe peoples.
Kwara North has the greatest thirst for the governorship and would deliver maximally if the ticket is ceded to it. Taking it away could trigger anger and protest votes.
Primaries and Reconciliation
Primaries have been held, and winners emerged per APC guidelines. Claims that no primaries took place are attempts to discredit candidate Salihu Yakubu Danladi and others. The Speaker, though young, is competent and has led the House successfully for seven years. I urge party leaders to embrace reconciliation and work for victory. Further altering the current arrangement will deepen divisions and reduce our chances.
For equity, cohesion, and long-term stability, Kwara North deserves a shot at Ahmadu Bello House now.
