Former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola has firmly denied rumors suggesting his return to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections. He stated his unwavering commitment to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he serves as National Secretary.
Aregbesola made this clarification during the ADC leadership and stakeholders' meeting held in Ilesa, Osun State, on Sunday, May 10. The gathering attracted party leaders and members from all 332 wards across the state.
According to a statement from the Osun ADC publicity secretary-elect, Oluwaseun Abosede, the former governor also introduced the party's governorship candidate for the August 15 election, Dr. Najeem Salaam, to party faithful.
Aregbesola Dismisses APC Return Rumors
Addressing stakeholders, Aregbesola described reports of his potential return to the APC as false and baseless. He emphasized that he has no reason to reconsider his decision to leave the ruling party over three years ago.
"Claims that I am returning to the APC are baseless and laughable. Since my exit from the APC over three years ago, I have had no reason whatsoever to look back," he stated.
Ex-Governor Accuses APC of Abandoning Ideals
Aregbesola criticized the APC for straying from its foundational principles. He argued that governance should prioritize citizens' welfare and security, values he claims the party has neglected.
"The APC has completely abandoned the foundational vision and people-oriented ideals upon which governance should stand. The primary essence of government remains welfare and security, both of which have been neglected and thrown into the dustbin," he said.
ADC Members Urged to Intensify Mobilization
Reaffirming his loyalty to the ADC, Aregbesola noted the party's continued growth despite political opposition. He urged members to strengthen grassroots mobilization for future elections.
The former governor expressed confidence that the ADC would perform strongly in the 2027 polls if members remain united and dedicated to the party's objectives.
Omoluabi Group Explains Exit from APC
The development follows the formal exit of the Omoluabi Progressives, a political group loyal to Aregbesola, from the APC. In a statement by Abosede, the group cited marginalization and unfair treatment of members as reasons for leaving.
The group expressed dissatisfaction with the APC's handling of internal disputes, which contributed to the party's poor performance in the last election cycle.
Court Suspends Ruling on ADC Leadership
In a related development, a Federal High Court in Abuja indefinitely adjourned a suit challenging the ADC's leadership structure under former Senate President David Mark. This legal setback deepens uncertainty within the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 political realignments.
